History of City
“In Al-Safat, one could look to the right beneath the bridge to find some shops, and the bridge extending from Al-Hakam Palace to Al-Diyafa Palace, as well as the second gate of the palace known as Bab Ibn Usfur. The photograph was taken in the year 1362 AH / 1943 CE. The photograph was taken in 1354 AH / 1935 CE.
The market pattern in Riyadh was in the form of stores lined up in the squares and wide streets in the center of town near the palace and mosque, where they could accommodate shoppers, their goods, and the transport animals that came to the market to transport goods or to display them for sale. These commercial shops and their locations are called (Mawsam, with a damma on the ‘mim’ and a fatha on the ‘seen’), which is a local dialect meaning a place of buying and selling.
The squares in the center of the city are connected to the markets, where ‘Al-Safat’ or ‘Al-Baraha’ is the most important square in old Riyadh due to its central location in the middle of the city, and for being surrounded by the main market.
In the northwest of Al-Hakam Palace, the rest of Riyadh’s markets are located where they extend west from Al-Safat, adjacent south of the Grand Mosque, and then head south to a wide square called Al-Muqaybirah (Al-Muqaybirah Square).
The photograph was taken in 1354 AH / 1935 CE.
